What Is a Contact Owner?

TL;DR

A contact owner is the single person on a CRM record who is accountable for the relationship with that contact. Ownership decides who follows up, where a reply or a booking routes, and whose numbers the record counts toward, which is why a contact has exactly one owner rather than a shared responsibility.

Why does every contact need exactly one owner?

Because follow-up is the thing that gets dropped when it is shared. A record with two owners carries an assumption on both sides that the other one has it, and the failure is silent: nothing anywhere is marked undone.

Ownership is also what makes routing possible. When a reply arrives, a form is submitted, or a meeting is booked, the system needs one destination, and a field holding one value is what supplies it.

When should contact ownership change?

At a handover with a defined trigger: an inbound lead assigned on arrival, a won deal passed to an account manager, a territory change, or a rep leaving. Each of those is a rule, and rules are what stop reassignment turning into a negotiation.

The history stays with the record rather than with the owner. A new owner who cannot read what the previous one already sent will send it again, which is why the activity log matters more at handover than at any other moment.
