What Is a Seed List?

TL;DR

A seed list is a set of test mailboxes you control across the major inbox providers, used to see where a campaign lands before it goes to real recipients. Each seed reports inbox, spam or missing for its own provider, which turns placement from an assumption into an observation you can act on.

What does a seed list tell you, and what does it miss?

It tells you the two things sending logs cannot: which folder a provider chose, and what that provider stamped in the headers, including the authentication results and any filtering verdict. Because placement differs by provider, a seed at each of the providers your list actually contains is what makes the result readable.

What it misses is history. A seed mailbox has never replied to you, never moved a message out of spam and has no correspondence with your domain, so it approximates a stranger and not a prospect. Treat a clean seed result as the absence of a technical fault rather than as proof the campaign will land.

How do you build a seed list?

Cover the providers by share of your list rather than by convenience: a personal Gmail account, a Microsoft 365 mailbox on a real domain, a Yahoo account, and at least one corporate domain sitting behind a security gateway, because gateways are stricter than any consumer provider.

Then keep them alive. A mailbox that only ever receives test sends and never sends, reads or files anything looks abandoned to its own provider, and an abandoned mailbox filters differently, which quietly makes the test pessimistic over time.

Frequently asked questions

  • Enough to cover each provider that appears in the list, which is usually a handful rather than dozens. More seeds at the same provider add little, because the filtering decision is made per provider, so breadth across providers is worth more than depth at one.
