Sales Director Email List
TL;DR
A sales director email list is a set of contact records for the sales leader one level below the VP, carrying a team number and working inside the CRM every day. In mid-market companies they are the buyer; in large ones they are the champion who builds the internal case for someone else to sign.

What makes sales directors different
A Sales Director is close enough to the floor to feel the problem and usually lacks the signature to fix it. That single fact should shape the whole sequence. Written to as a buyer, the best available champion in the organisation gets a message they cannot act on and quietly disengage. Written to as a champion, with material they can forward and a business case they can defend to their VP, they do work no vendor can do from outside.
They are measured on the number their team carries and on the activity that produces it: pipeline created per rep, conversion through the stages they own, and whether their forecast is trusted. Because they sit in the CRM more than any executive does, they know precisely where a rep loses the day, and they are concrete in a way a VP is not. A message that names one step of the rep day, the research before a call, the notes after it, the follow-up that never went out, gets further than one that names an outcome.
Director and VP are the same job at different company sizes, so the size band decides whether this is a decision-maker list at all. At a hundred-person company the Sales Director is the top sales person, sets the process and has budget. At a three-thousand-person company they are one of many, report through a VP to a CRO, and inherit a tool stack chosen above them. Filter for the first group when you want a buyer and the second when you want internal pull.
What is a sales director measured on?
The quota their team carries, the pipeline each rep creates, conversion through the stages they own, and how reliable their forecast turns out to be. Coaching and rep retention sit behind those and rarely appear in a target, but they consume the working week.
The practical consequence is that they buy time back for reps, not features. Anything that removes a step from the rep day converts into their number directly, and they can already see how.
How do you write to a champion rather than a buyer?
Give them the argument, not the pitch: what changes, what it costs, what the risk is, and what evidence exists. Assume the message will be pasted into a note to their VP, and write the part they would have had to write themselves.
The ask should be equally small and internal, such as a short trial with one team, since a director can usually approve a pilot even when they cannot approve a contract.
When is a sales director the actual decision maker?
When there is no VP of Sales above them, which is the normal situation through the lower mid-market. In that case they own process, tooling and often the hiring plan, and the deal cycle is short because there is nobody to convince.
Employee count is the workable proxy for this. Combine it with whether the company has a separate revenue operations function, because that usually appears at the same point the VP layer does.
Frequently asked questions
Yes, with different messages, and say so in both. Parallel outreach to two levels is normal and expected in sales organisations; what damages the deal is sending the same email to both, or reaching the VP after the director has already engaged without mentioning it.
